Northern Lights Council

Rabbit Hill Scout Ski Trip - Mar 8th

Northern Lights Council holding Rabbit Hill Scout Ski for youth, volunteers and friends is scheduled for Saturday, Mar 8th, 2008 from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm.

Kim Fuoco at the Council office is still looking for about six rovers or venturers to do an offer of service, for the event. I have asked a few groups but to-date I have not had any replies. The service they would provide is quite easy just registering the equipment out and in. So, any suggestions would be appreciated. If we do not get an offer of service we will have to pay for the service and the cost to the Council goes up.

Thanks so much.

Kim Fuoco, Northern Lights Council Feb 25th, 2008

Beaver Winter Games 2008

Beaver Winter Games 2008 - March 1st

This Saturday, we will be holding the Beaver Winter Ganes in St. Albert. If you can spare a few minutes, please drop by and cheer the youngsters in their activities.

Important Update - the Activity Plan and Schedule is now available for download. Leaders, please note that we still need volunteers for one more activity stand, the snack station, first aiders, and a Snow Painting gathering game. Please contact Scouter Rockford Lang if you can offer your services.

Congratulations !! go to Courtney from 12th St. Albert Scout Group, for her winning submission for the Beaver Winter Games 2008 Patch. We received a total of 26 submissions which were judged by five individuals including a professional graphic artist.

The last time Beaver Winter Games were held in and around St. Albert was in the year 2000. Now, seven years later and nearing the end of our 100 years of Scouting celebrations here in Alberta, the Beavers want to have a special winter event to commemorate our year of centennial celebrations.

The theme for the Beaver Winter Games 2008 will be - "Scouting Centennial Beaver Style". The Beavers will participate in a rotation of 6 events throughout the afternoon with a short break in the middle of the afternoon to warm up and take in some nutrition.

The afternoon will feature a number of exciting Beaver games that will keep all youth challenged and make this a very fun, memorable Beaver experience!! Your Beavers will not want to miss this event!

  • Where:   LACOMBE PARK, ST. ALBERT, ALBERTA
  • When:   March 1st, 2008
  • Schedule:   Registration starts 12:15 pm; Opening ceremonies 1:30 pm; Closing 5:00 pm (approx). See the Activity Plan and Schedule
  • Registration:   Deadline is Feb 15th, 4:30 pm (MST), with payment - see Registration Package for details.

Registration is limited to 150 Beavers and adults. All groups who are active participants in running events or helping at the Beaveree will be given first preference on registration if the registration numbers exceed the event limit. In event we reach max numbers, spaces will be for Beavers and not extra adults.

You're Invited to the B-P Torch Parade in Morinville

Lord Baden-Powell

We will be holding a B-P Torch Parade in Morinville on Wednesday,
Feb 20th, 2008
. The time to arrive is between 6:00 pm to 6:20 pm. we will meet at the Parish Hall and start the parade at 6:30 there is ample parking at this hall. As for the torches they could be made from what ever will burn, we use about a 3 inch stick with the end wrap in burlap soak with wax.

All Beavers will have glow sticks or Flash lights only please.

I have outlined the route and it could change depending on the amount of people attending. At 6:30 we will follow this route and then end up at a dead end street where there will be a large fire pit to start our fire. I was thinking that every group could do a song and cheer.

As this should take an hour it should be around 7:30 and we can walk across into the hall and gather for Hot Chocolate and cookies.

I have ask the Morinville Girl Guides to participate If there are any more groups it is open to everyone I believe this hall can accommodate 500 people If we could match that number or close to it I would phone Global News so get the word out.

I would like to have some kind of number of people attending back to me for Feb 1st. You can call me at 939-7338 (evenings) or email me at bbachand @ edmkw.com

Yours In Scouting.

Beavers Having Fun on the Hill

On Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 our Beaver Colony went out tobogganing at Liberton Hill in St. Albert. After some crazy afternoon weather we wound up having a beautiful night with lots of fresh snow to play in.

After running up and down the hill, and taking out a few leaders with high speed sleds, we all enjoyed hot chocolate and treats.

All Beavers in attendance received their Winter Beaver badge for their camp blanket. A great time was enjoyed by all parents and youth.

Our thanks go to Scouter Jen Smith for providing this.

Scouter's Club

For Leaders - Online Scouter's Club

As an experienced Scouter, I remember the work that I had to go through to find any online resources. Many hours were spent in Google looking. Our goal with the "Online Scoutere's Club" is to provide a central place to easily find what you need.

Online Scouter's Club comprises a set of pages that contain links to what you will most commonly need:

  • Our online Resource Library offers links to different online resources including jumpstarts, websites for kids, program ideas, nifty forms, and PDF guides, manuals and articles. All of the resources are organized into collections to match the youth programs ... Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers.
  • Leader Magazine provides a wealth of valuable online articles for leaders (and parents), so we provide an online index of current articles and a link back to the Scouts Canada archive for Leader Magazine.
  • Because we refer to it all the time, you can acess Scouts Canada online "Bylaws, Policies & Procedures" at our BP & P page.
  • Planning activities requires completing some paperwork, so we provided an online list of available forms.
  • Leader Training is a catalogue of courses, workshops and sessions that can be provided by Northern Lights Council, Buffalo Plains Area, a Group or Section.
  • The NLC Courses Schedule links directly to the courses schedule on the Northern Lights Council website.
  • If you can't find what you're looking for or if you have a question, you can go to Ask Tony and ask our Area Commissioner, Tony Lovell your question.
  • There's even an online suggestion box so you can tell us about a valuable online resource that you discover.

We hope that you find the Online Scouter's Club a useful place to hang your hat.

Beaver Fun

Beaver Winter Games 2008 Planning Meeting

Now that we have some snow on the ground, the first organizing meeting for the St. Albert\Morinville Beaver Winter Games 2008 will be held at the St. Albert Inn cafe (just off hotel main foyer) from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 8, 2007.

The Beaver Winter Games 2008 are scheduled to take place Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the Lacombe Park Community Hall (and surrounding outdoor area), in St. Albert, and the event is open to any Colony in the Buffalo Plains Area (BPA).

BPA Scouting Groups interested in participating in the Games should be prepared to attend the organizational meeting on Dec. 8. If there are not enough groups participating in the Dec. 8th meeting to indicate support for the Beaver Winter Games in March, 2008, then they shall not proceed. Groups should also come prepared to suggest and run an activity at the event.

Based upon the estimated number of participating groups, initial plans are to have 6 activity stations with one of these activities being an in-door snack\refreshment station. If there are larger numbers participating, then more stations will be added to keep the individual station groups at approx. 10 to 15 Beavers in any one group.

I would appreciate a reply indicating the following:

  • whom from your Group will be attending the meeting;
  • your Group number and how many registered Beavers you have for 2007-08; and,
  • your Group's Beaver Contact Leader's email (if it is different from the person attending the meeting)

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Beaver meeting December 8th.

Scouts Canada Website Goes GREEN !

The Scouts Canada website has recently gone under the knife and emerged with a new look and feel. Switching from bright colours and white backgrounds, the new website now employs earth tones and an organized menu system to easily locate what you are looking for.

After looking through the revised site, I am pleased to report that all of the content from the previous version was retained. Parents can locate guides and other referential material under "For Parents", Leaders can find material under "For Volunteers" and the material for each of the youth programs is found under "For Youth".

The "Leader Magazine" was the only thing that took me a few minutes to find. You'll be able to find both the "Current Issue" and the "Archive".

Happy surfing!

Canoe Training

Canoe Training for Leaders

Some Buffalo Plains Area Groups have expressed an interest in getting their troop leaders on a canoe certification course.

We would like to know how many leaders would be interested in attaining this certification. We want to know what the interest rate is among the troops. Please remember that you need one leader that has been certified in canoeing, before going on a canoeing adventure with scouting youth.

Please use our "Contact Us" form to indicate your interest to Virginia.

OK folks, time to ge the word out.

The Corner Gas episode portraying Scouts Canada youth in it will aire on October 29th on CTV and it will be called
"Wash Me".

We have it on good authority that the youth protrayed in this episode are child actors, but they represent us well.

2007 Rover Registration Info

NEW! Rover Registration info for fall 2007!

Rovers

What is the Rover Registration fee 2007/2008?

There is no special Rover Registration Fee in Northern Lights Council.

The registration fee for those that are BOTH a Rover and a Leader is based on their Primary Organization Unit in the Membership Management System (MMS).

The Leader/Rover would have to submit two (2) registration forms ... the Program Participant Enrolment Form and the Application for Membership and Appointment of Volunteers Form, and undergo the Volunteer Screening Process including interview/reference checks and provide a current clean Police Record Check (PRC).

A Rover is considered to be a Program Participant and therefore, if the Rover applies to be registered as a Rover only – (Program Participant) position, the program participant fee would apply and they would fill out the “Program Participant Enrolment Form”.

If the Rover applies to be registered as a Leader/Rover – then there is no cost for that registration.

The Scout Group with which the Rover is registering would include the Rovers name on the Section Registration and complete the necessary forms and screening process as with any Adult Leader. The responsibility is on the Scout Group to ensure that the Rover is in fact a Rover/Leader.

Ernest Poole Scout Camp

EPSC 2007 Fall Fix-Fest

12 - 14 October 2007

The Ernest Poole Camp Committee Needs your help!! It takes a number of volunteers to help prepare the campsite for the coming season as well as make much needed improvements.

Over the past couple of years, several projects have been started to improve the facilities and infrastructure at Ernest Poole. Many of these improvements have been the direct result of feedback received from our members. Without additional help, the Poole Camp Committee can only accomplish so much. Please come out and help us make the camp better for you and your youth.

Please contact Ken Ell at (780) 473-0452 if you have any questions or need further details. Please register with Ken or through the Council Office if you plan on attending so that we can design a work schedule that will provide us with the most bang for our buck! If you have any special qualifications, i.e. plumber, electrician, drywaller etc, please let Ken know so that we can put your talents to the best possible use.

As a token of appreciation for your participation in Fall Fix-Fest 2007, all camping fees for the weekend will be waived AND Saturday night’s meal will be provided free of charge. We’ll even cook it for you!!
