Buffalo Plains & Western Trails Cuboree 2008
May 30th to June 1st saw the "Gathering of the Pack" so to speak ... and a large pack it was. We had 176 cubs and 98 leaders, parent helpers and scouts from 17 Scout Groups gather at the Chickakoo Lake Scout Camp for a weekend of fun, games, and traditional cubbing and camping activities.

Group cub packs arrived on Friday evening and set up camp. All packs had to come self-contained for the weekend including tents, gear, water and food.
It wasn't easy, but space was allocated so that all packs enjoyed enough space to enjoy comfort and have fun throughout the weekend.
Morning Gathering
Morning started with wake-up calls, breakfast prepared at each pack campsite, and getting ready for a busy day.
At 9:30 we all gathered at the flag pole for a traditional opening which included firing a model rocketto to commemorate our Cuboree theme which was
"Cubbing - The Next 100 Years".

Having Fun
Cubs were then divided into nine groups and assigned an activity stand to start at.
A total of nine activity stands were hosted by individual Groups. There were seven rotations on Saturday and the final two rotations happened Sunday morning.
Activities included:
Orienteering (hosted by 1st Vegreville) included working with compasses and GPS devices. Cubs were assigned four targets to find.

Bannock Cooking (hosted by 12th St Albert and 1 Castle Fire Groups). Cubs were provided bannock dough which they cooked over an open fire.
Fire Starting (hosted by 129th Luther) Cubs were shown how to make fires and then got an opportunity to build and light their own campfire.
Necklace Craft (hosted by 1st Gibbons) Cubs made camp necklaces to take home. After cubs were organized into teams to play pass the ball or tug-o-war.
Potato Cannons (hosted by 38th Edm Garrison) Cubs loaded and fired potato cannons.
Leather craft - Wristband (hosted by 56th Kirk) Using leather punch tools, cubs made their own wrist bands.

Bottle Rockets (hosted by 5th St Albert) How high will it fly ... cubs fired off water rockets!
Canoeing (hosted by 4th Spruce Grove) Always a camp favorite, all cubs spent time on the lake canoeing.
Archery (hosted by 119th Edmonton) How good is your aim ... cubs had a chance to shoot arrows at targets.
Saturday evening we gathered for a BBQ supper prepared by some of the leaders and parent helpers. After, cubs enjoyed some free time before gahering at 10:00 pm to participate in a traditional "Campfire" to share songs, skits and cheers.
Sunday saw us gather for a "Scout's Own" followed by the final two rotations of our activity stands. Cubs and leaders finally returned to the flagpole to a closing and then we all broke camp and headed home.
Thanks
Successful weekend camps don't just happen. Thanks must go to Scouters Ray Dunn (38 Edmonton Garrison) and Terry Richelhoff (5th St. Albert) who organized this Cuboree. Everything was well organized and the schedule ran smoothly. Additional thanks must go to the leaders and scouts who hosted the nine activity stands which entertained and challenged the cubs.
