Beaver Winter Games 2008

Beaver Winter Games 2008

The Beaver Winter Games, held March 1st at Larose Park in St. Albert, were an overwhelming success. Approximately 70 Beavers, and 30 leaders/parent helpers, turned out to enjoy an afternoon of curling, snow shoeing, fishing, snow golf, potato cannons, and Beaver ice carving.

The weather cooperated, with the sun shining, and our Beavers were able to undertake challenging events that tested their skills and showed youth and adults how to have fun in the snow.

The last Beaver Winter Games were held in 2000, and I'm certain everyone who attended agreed this event should become an annual part of Beaver winter activities in our Buffalo Plains Area. In addition, the 12th St. Albert Beaver Colony won the prize for the best costumes - Tree Beavers, and KG from 174 Lago Lindo won the Spirit of Baden Powell Award.

This fantastic opportunity could not have taken place, nor been the success it was, without all the help from our participating Scouting Groups. While there are way too many leaders/volunteers to mention, a special thanks is extended to Jennifer Smith, 2nd St. Albert-Wed., Wayne Winter, 56th Kirk; David Mcleod, 5th St. Albert; Jerry Veldhuis, 2nd St. Albert-Tues; Kevin MacKoway, 2nd Kilkenny; Julie Dzeryk, 174 Lago Lindo; Sandi Furgeson, 1st Castlefire, and Lily McGraw, 12th St. Albert.

Many thanks to our professional ice carver, Heinz Zadler from Edmonton, for teaching the Beavers the skills of ice carving, and to Courtney M., from 12th St. Albert Beavers, for designing our great looking Beaver Winter Games '08 Badge. Congratulations are also in order to each Beaver Colony that made a BWG trophy to share with the other participating Colonies. A lot of time and effort went into the design and construction of the trophies, and now each Colony will keep their trophy to bring back next year to share again with another participating Colony.

Good news, Jennifer Smith of 2nd St. Albert has agreed to take the lead in organizing Beaver Winter Games 2009. We can certainly look forward to Jennifer bringing her unique Beaver insight into the design of the games, as well as more entertaining activity stations for our youth to enjoy. Once again, my many thanks to all Beavers, Leaders, parents and volunteers for helping make this event happen.
